Major (little) League

June 2, 2022 - WTF is going on in Major League Baseball?! We are about two months into the season and it seems like we have seen more then our fair share of position players on the mound. Teams have been putting in position players like, Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina, and Wil Myers to pitch when teams are being blown out. It may be the stupidest thing we have ever seen in baseball. These players are not doing well and I am not sure if it is a way to grow the game or if teams are trying to save their bullpen arms for when it really matters. Lets take a look at the position players who have pitched so far this year:

Andrelton Simmons - Chicago Cubs

1 g 1 IP 5 H 5 R 45.00 ERA

Josh Harrison - Chicago White Sox

1 g 1 IP 2 R 1 K 1 BB 1 HR 18.00 ERA

Hanser Alberto - Los Angeles Dodgers

2 g 4.50 ERA 1.50 WHIP 0 K

Carson Kelly - Arizona Diamondbacks

1 g 0.00 ERA 0 K

Brett Phillips - Tampa Bay Rays

2 g 3 IP 8 H 8 R 3 HR 0 K 2 BB 24.00 ERA

Wil Myers - San Diego Padres

1 g 1 IP 2 H 0 K 0 BB 18.00 ERA

Dee-Strange Gordon - Washington Nationals

1 g 1 IP 2 H 3 R 1 HR 27.00 ERA

Mike Brosseau - Milwaukee Brewers

1 g 1 IP 1 H 1 BB 0.00 ERA

Diego Castilla - Pittsburgh Pirates

1 G 1 IP 4 R 1 BB 36.00 ERA

Kevin Plawecki - Boston Red Sox

1 G 1 IP 0 R 0.00 ERA

Mat Reynolds - Cincinnati Reds

1 g 1.1 IP 3 H 1 R 6.75 ERA

Nick Gordon - Minnesota Twins

1 G 1 IP 1 H 0 K 0.0 ERA

Luis Gonzales - San Francisco Giants

3 g 4.1 IP 5 H 3 R 0 K 1 BB 6.32 ERA

Albert Pujols - St. Louis Cardinals

1 G 1 IP 3 H 4 R 2 HR 0 K 1 BB 36.00 ERA

Yadier Molina - St. Louis Cardinals

1 G 1 IP 4 H 4 ER 0 K 2 HR 36.00 ERA

Chad Pinder - Oakland Athletics

1 G 1 IP 2 H 3 R 0 K 2 BB 27.00 ERA

So far this year position players on the mound have an average of a 17.16 ERA and at that point it seems like a giant waste of time to have them out there. I understand the argument of saving a teams bullpen, but baseball is already a long game no player wants to waste more time by watching a position player lob in a 56 MPH fastball.

Imagine being a position player who isn’t pitching and you see Albert Pujols walking to the mound to pitch an inning. The man has played first base or DH his entire career, the only time he is throwing the ball is back to the pitcher after he makes a nice dig for an out. I thought the funniest players was Yadier Molina. As one of the best and most accurate defensive catchers in baseball history, you would think Yadi would be able to fire one in the strike zone. No, he was lobbing it in there like the rest of them. No wonder teams have been crushing homeruns with position players on the mound. This is something little league would do if they were loosing big in a game. Probably bring in the right fielder (clearly the worst in little league) to come in because he has never pitched before and the coach wants everyone to get a chance. This is the Major Leagues, guys don’t want to see that shit more than once.

All fans do is complain about how long the game of baseball is, even Commissioner Manfred is trying to come up with ways to speed up the game by adding a pitch clock, and time allowed outside the batters box. Yet, here we have players who haven’t pitched since high school on the mound, wasting even more time for their team and their opponents. I know I for one am looking forward to seeing who else takes the mound this year in Major (Little) League Baseball.
